One of my fellow travellers on our recent vintage trip to York was the crazily talented illustrator Emma Block. We got chatting, and I found out that Emma has recently illustrated a book jam packed with afternoon tea recipes. Now, tea, cake, books and pretty illustrations are all up there with my favourite things, so Emma kindly arranged to have her publishers send me a review copy.
And boooooooy am I pleased she did! This is a super, dooper, loop-de-looper book of ultimate prettiness. For a start, the pages have that lovely thick, matte quality, while the recipes are both droolable and look relatively easy to make. And of course the main event, the illustrations, are quirky and sweet and fun. I really want to get a book stand just so I can have them on display in my kitchen.
The book is split into sections on planning a tea party and making the perfect pot of tea, followed by recipes for savouries, big cakes, small cakes, biscuits and buns, pastries, whoopie pies, and tea-based cocktails (wheee!). I definitely want to try making the leek and artichoke scones, banana daiquiri cupcakes, pasionfruit yoyos, and brandy breakfast tea.
