Doris Day yesterday made history by becaming the oldest ever singer to make the UK top ten with an album of new songs. The album was produced in part by her son Terry, who died in 2004, and entered the charts at number nine. Vera Lynn is still the oldest performer to top the charts at age 92, but that was with a ‘best of’ compilation. There is a competition to win a Doris Day prize pack including the new album at website So So Gay (brilliant name), or you can buy on Amazon.
In conjunction with the album release (her first in 17 years), BBC Four showed a new documentary on Doris, as well as an older documentary from 1992 and a 1971 TV special with guests Rock Hudson and Perry Como. The shows were aired on Saturday night, but if you missed them you can watch them on iPlayer. They are also playing again later on tonight, so be quick if you want to catch them!
