| I love this image from Mary van Notes |
People seemed to like the last round-up of articles and posts I did, so I thought I’d do another link-up of things I’ve enjoyed reading recently. I am always saving little snippets of information and pictures and stories that I like, and it is so much nicer to pass them on to share with others. Hope you all like the ones I have chosen below.
Mr D passed this one on to me. It is a first hand account from a 19th century French feminist called Flora Tristan, who spent a night on the town with Victorian London prostitutes. We often tend to idealise the behaviour and morals of the past, so I think it is important to read this sort of thing as a reality check. Even in the old days, gentlemen weren’t always terribly gentlemanly. A night at a Victorian gin palace
Tuppence Ha’penny wrote a whole week of informative posts on the history of synthetic fibres and fabrics, covering polyester, acrylic, rayon and nylon.
Christopher Hitchens is one of my favourite commentators, here he writes about the historical inaccuracies in The Kings Speech. Nowadays many of us learn about history through film, so I think film-makers have an obligation to make things as accurate as possible. It makes me angry when events or people are idealised beyond reality for the sake of a good story.
For those among you who are handy with a needle and thread, Cargo Cult Craft has a downloadable Make Do and Mend for Victory scanned original vintage booklet.
The Citizen Rosebud has put together a list of fashion bloggers over forty. Although a bit younger, I read most of these girls myself. It is nice to read about how people of different ages can have fun with fashion.
Fashion Pearls of Wisdom has one of her handy designer guides: All about Vivienne Westwood Pirate boots and how to identify fakes
After being seeing Black Swan, the sweet blogger Oh So Sophi talks about living with bipolar depression.
Enchanted Vintage Clothing has written a brief history of Elizabeth Arden
Lady Cherry gives step by step instructions for everyday vintage make-up. Really useful for a cosmetics klutz like me.
Vint Junky lists out the 50 best online vintage stores (I was stoked to see Penny Dreadful Vintage on the list!)
Mademoiselle Antonova at My Outer Values tells us all about Belgian shoes (a traditional loafer brand I hadn’t even heard of)
The Licentiate asks who was Truman Capote’s inspiration for Holly Golightly?
Some people aren’t sure which eras or styles best suit their body shape. If you are an apple, Crinoline Robot has givenThe best vintage styles for apple shapes.
This one resonated with me, the stunning blogger Keiko Lynn wrote about her experience of false friends. Even the prettiest girls had to deal with bullying in school. If you are still at school and dealing with mean-hearted morons, take heart: it gets better.
And here are just a few of the images I’ve loved in the last fortnight:
