Literary Style Icon: Anne of Green Gables

It wasn’t hard to pick my next literary style icon. What little girl doesn’t want to be Anne of Green Gables when she grows up?  I still think of my friends as kindred spirits, and deep down I want to live in a white clapboard cottage with shutters and an orchard and a lake of shining waters and carry a slate to school and be the smartest girl in class and eventually marry Gilbert Blythe (sorry Mr D!). These are my picks for what a modern Anne Shirley might have in her wardrobe.

    >Oh I could hug you, I really could. I adore the Anne books and have a huge soft spot for Anne's House of Dreams. I sob every time I read it.

Also I think I want every single thing in the list. Most of all I'd like Gilbert though.

    >I've never read Anne of Green Gables so it's a whole new world to me, I was a Famous Five child, all ginger beer and secret dens in the woods.
Love the head dress, the nightie and the blackberry wine, preferably all together in front of a roaring log fire. xxx

    >An old family favourite. I do not know the times my girls and I have watched it. Apart from the clothes, the photography, the atmosphere. The script is sooooooooooooooo good and ageless…
I adore puffy sleeves. The puffier the better.

    >Gorgeous picks! I love Anne of Green Gables. I must get whichever is the best version on DVD as I read the book at least twice when I was a child. I like Vix also read every single Famous Five and Enid Blyton book. Hope you're having a good week xx

  21. pixelhazard 16/11/2010 at 7:39 am #

    >that purple satchel and head piece is so win! I have yet to read anne of green gables despite it being recommended to me.

I bought a really really old boater hat ages ago loving it…and now it's in. Yay gut instinct!

    >You have literally just made my DAY by reminding me of my love for Anne Shirly, Marilla, and her flowing red locks. Not to mention the long skirt and boots affair. *swoon*. I am so pleased that so many other gals out there feel the same about these books/films. I thought it was just me!

    >hehe, you've made this Canadian Anne lover very happy ;)

  25. Chuck 16/11/2010 at 7:15 pm #

    >Such a cute post… x

  26. MrsBossa 16/11/2010 at 8:42 pm #

    >I love your literary-themed posts.

I read you on Anne of Green Gables, but for me it was Elizabeth from 'The Naughtiest Girl in the School' – I loved her shoe and knee sock combo! (I also loved the mentions of potted shrimp and tins of toffee)

I believe you have red hair now – did the garland picture sway you by any chance?! It's stunning!

  27. The Style PA 16/11/2010 at 11:07 pm #

    >I applied for this role in a production when I was a kid, didn't it though. My accent wasn't quite up to scratch.

  28. Annebeth 17/11/2010 at 12:21 pm #

    >This is totally awesome, and quite funny to see that those clothes are actually still quite hip, especially this F/W with the longer hemlines! :D

  29. Penny Dreadful 17/11/2010 at 5:43 pm #

    >Thanks possums, I have to admit this made me want to read the books and watch the film all over again!

eurekapaprika – not just Canadian girls! (and not such a secret obsession either, for me)

Maria – highest compliment ever :)

Alex – I think I need to collect the Anne books, I have such a strong desire to read them all now. And Gilbert, rroowr

Kate – thank you very much :)

Akeela – and who wouldn't be an Anne Shirley fan, she is the creme de la creme of heroines!

Sharon – I love that tweed jacket too but can't keep it as it is tight over the arms, sob!

Courtney Erin – I had so much fun, I basically got to pretend to be Anne going shopping :D

Peas – yeah you should go to PEI! Report back x

Vix – oh I was Famous Five too, definitely. And Milly Molly Mandy. And Emily of New Moon. In fact, I reckon George will have to be one of our icons, it will be all ginger beer and plaid and scruffy dogs. I reckon you would like Anne :)

sacramento – I know, I saw this movie so many times when I was young and never got sick of it. I really need to watch it again.

otherworldlyone – the ball dress is awesome isn't it. Unfortunately I can't wear puffed sleeves, it would just make me look like a trimmed rack of lamb.

Sarah – I know, I wish the prairie shirt was in my size too :/ Wouldn't it be great if they put the film on this Christmas! We should start a letter campaign.

Michele – I know, I wish I could afford the tartan bag, it is lovely.

Veronica – thanks, just taking a look at your blog right now :)

Mrs Cleaver – Oh yes, it has to be Megan. It was her cheeky grin which made it.

Beckerman Girls – thanks girls, it took me ages to find just the right carrot charm for her!

Molly – yes, Anne made bookish, imaginative girls everywhere feel better about themselves :)

Rebekka – glad you liked :)

Christina – I need to get it on DVD too. Might even have a girly Anne night and invite some friends over to drink wine and watch the film!

pixelhazard – well done you! I really want a boater hat but am holding out for something special. The more expensive one is my taste, but the Asos one is my budget – darn!

Robbie – following you now too, great blog :)

LandGirl1980 – it is definitely not just you! How I would love a little pair of Edwardian boots to run around in.
books/films. I thought it was just me!

Baroness – Yes I thought the Canadians would particularly like this one ;)

Chuck – thank you my dear :)

MrsBossa – I never read The Naughtiest Girl in the School! Will need to seek that out, anything with potted shrimps gets my attention. Red hair was my hairdressers idea, god love her.

The Style PA – aw nuts. Though I always think I would hate to be the actor in any of my favourite films, because then I couldn't enjoy it myself.

Annebeth – I know! Everything she is wearing in the last pic you could certainly wear now.

    >Tut-tut! It was Gilbert BLYTHE, wasn't it? (was it? It's been so long, I'm not sure anymore!)

Perhaps he was called Blake in other editions?

  31. Penny Dreadful 22/01/2011 at 7:32 pm #

    >Right you are EL – how could I have got that wrong!
