Stunning vintage art deco beaded evening purse dating from the late 1920s or early 1930s. Several varieties of evening bags were known as tango purses at the time – some had small chains so that they could dangle from the wrist, and this style has a small strap on the back so that you can loop it through your fingers. They were called tango bags as the hands could be kept free for dancing the tango, the hot new dance craze at the time. Ladies would also slip their gloves through the strap to keep them safe after ty had taken them off indoors.
This little purse is embellished with small round white beads as a background, and bugle beads in a swirling art deco design. It is lined in cotton with a small pocket for a mirror. No fastening, the flap simply folds over.
Condition is incredibly good for the age. I can’t find any missing beads and the finger strap is secure.
