Vintage semi-sheer cotton voile dress dating from the circa mid 30s, which is in two pieces. The top has the original shoulder pads, a small collar, shirring at the shoulders, short sleeves, and a double layer frilled peplum at the high-cut waist. There are also belt loops. The back fastens with a row of five fabric-covered buttons, and there is also a metal zip at the side. The skirt is in a soft a-line and comes to below the knee, it fastens at the hip with press studs and has a grosgrain waistband which fastens with hooks. The fabric is printed with a design of mixed leaves in purple burgundy colour on a whit background. The dress will need to be worn with a slip underneath.

Label: no brand, but there is a tiny ’40′ tag inside

General size: medium

Condition: The fabric has no holes or tears and the seams are all in good condition. The main issue with this piece is the purple colour running into the white, which has happened in numerous places. It is mainly around the seams which leads me to think it is the thread which isn’t colour-fast, rather than the fabric. This isn’t so obvious when it is being worn, except around the waist. I would get around this by wearing a belt to cover the colour migration. There are also some pale tea-coloured stains on the skirt which are pictured. These may come out with dry cleaning (make sure your cleaner knows how to deal with vintage pieces). I haven’t attempted any kind of hand-washing due to the colour issues, I would suggest this does need to be dealt with by a good dry cleaner. The only other point is that the covered buttons have some marks where the metal has started to rust; if this was an issue you could replace them with plastic buttons, or recover new ones with some fabric taken from elsewhere in the dress, perhaps by shortening the sleeves a little. Colour issues aside, the dress is still in great, wearable condition and with a small amount of effort could be wonderfully restored.
