I wanted to do something a little bit different in the store this week. This year, London is hosting World Pride 2012. It is an extremely Big Deal, but you wouldn’t know it watching or reading the mainstream media; apparently a competition to see who can run fastest is more important than an event promoting tolerance, respect, and equality.
I’ve nothing against the Olympics really, though sport isn’t something that interests me personally and the involvement of ethically dubious companies like McDonald’s, Coke, and Dow Chemicals turn me off in the extreme. But what really bugs me is that so much money and promotion has been poured into this one event, and others have been left to flounder. The London Pride event tomorrow has had to cut back drastically on what was originally planned, due to a lack of sponsorship and funding. It has also barely been covered in any kind of media. It is a crying shame, and left me feeling sad and angry that such an important cause has been all but ignored.
So this week in Penny Dreadful Vintage, it is all about Pride – because some of us DO care enough to want equal rights for everyone. Good luck to anyone taking part in the procession tomorrow. If you want to attend, details can be found on the London Pride website.

Well said! I do think that it’s terrible how so much money that has been lost from other initiatives because of the Olympics! That rainbowy dress is lovely!
I found out today that Bristol Pride is sadly going to be overshadowed by the fact that the EDL have chosen to stage a march through the city that day. This makes me really angry and sad. I shall be wearing something rainbow coloured and being extra flamboyant in protest.
Brilliant post Margaret! I can’t beleieve how all the coverage on it seems to have been ‘hushed’. I hope they shouted even louder in the procession this morning. x
