If you haven’t already come across Gabby Young and Other Animals, you should get her onto your radar right now – if not for her sumptuous and quirky music, then for her incredible theatrical vintage style.
Gabby’s stage presence is huge, which means towering headdresses, cascades of sequins, masses of coloured tulle spilling out from under 50s dresses, full Disney princess ball gowns, and surreal 60s style eye make-up. All that is topped off with flaming red hair, twisted into anything from an over the top Marie Antoinette style, to a My Fair Lady flower-seller messy up do, to a dead straight hippy style, or glamorous 40s waves.
Gabby and her stylist Katie Antoniou popped round to the flat the other day to have a rummage in the stock room, and I have to say it was the most fun I’ve ever had picking out garments to suit someone’s style. I have a soft spot for a bit of bling and drama myself, so it was a wonderful treat to pull the most outrageous frocks down from the rails knowing full well Gabby would look amazing in them.
The Band Called Out For More is the new album from Gabby Young and Other Animals, which means she’ll be appearing at lots of festivals and gigs this summer and autumn. So keep an eye out for her, it is always an amazing show.
As to the music? Having heard the album I’m now a big fan, no need to beat around the bush. It is impossible to categorize, but try to imagine a mixture of honky tonk, oom-pa-pa, acoustic folk, soulful strings, brassy 30s jazz, and thumping drums. Over all of that Gabby’s rich, warm voice filters through like it has come from the speakers of a big old radio. It really isn’t like anything else out there at the moment.
The Band Called Out For More can be purchased on Amazon or any other fine purveyor of music.
