British department store stalwarts Marks and Spencers have been coming out with some fabulous patriotic products lately for the Queen’s Jubilee year. As a staunch anti-monarchist I really couldn’t give a fig about The Crowned One, but I do love me a good Union Jack. And if the marketing gurus of M&S have decided that patriotic means vintage, and vintage means 50s style underwear… well, I might not entirely follow their logic, but I’m certainly glad of the chance to snap up some pretty knickers.
My top pick of the range (which was snapped as seen above on what must have been very chilly models on Oxford Street yesterday) are the high waisted animal print pants. They are very similar to the undies worn by Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones. Of course wouldn’t you know it, they seem to be the only things not available online yet. You can get the same print in a bikini pant or a thong, but neither of those are particularly vintage so hassle M&S for the high waist version! There is also a satin bullet-stitched bra, but be careful – the stitching follows the classic circular lines of a bullet bra but the actual shape seems to be quite modern. This is one to go for if you like the stitched appearance of the 50s bras but don’t want the pointed look.
They also have come out with a rather fab range of novelty tights, titled ‘Patriotic Prints’. My favourites are the ones with the London skyline, and I think I will have to treat myself to a pair. I also love the back-seam ‘Made in Britain’ tights (though I can’t wear these being an Aussie ex-pat), and naturally the Union Jack printed ones. To make the colour on these really stand out you can wear a pair of opaque white tights underneath.
