Vintage Outfit: Black 50s Vamp Dress

This is the outfit I wore several months ago for my cousin’s wedding in Sydney. Me and my family were going to be doing a lot of travelling after the wedding and my dress would be squashed down in a suitcase, so I went for a fabric that would need zero ironing – a draped chiffon in super-powered polyester. The dress is actually from the 70s, but I bought it for its extremely 50s shape and style. It is by the label John Charles, which produced lots of great evening wear in the 70s and 80s and is still easy to find at good prices on eBay. That is a top tip from me! This one in particular though, I bought from Naomi of Vintage Secret when she was still selling vintage.

To give you a behind-the-scenes look into my glamorous vintage life, the full length shots below show where we were staying. Mr D had top bunk, I had the bottom, and my parents had the double bed. Keep in mind this is the first time Mr D had ever met my parents, and we all spent a solid week sharing hotel rooms while we showed him around my home country. A lesser man would have quailed!

Outfit details: 70s does 50s chiffon dress by John Charles, vintage 40s/50s diamanté necklace handed down from my great-grandmother,  silver shoes by Miss Selfridge. I also carried a beaded 50s purse, and a vintage fur stole for later in the night when things got chilly down by the water.

Those are some tight living quarters…my helpmeet would have freaked if he were meeting my folks for the first time under similar circumstances. And that dress looks amazingly stunning on you, BTW.
